- MUST 2026 held in Wuhan, China
The 5th International Workshop on Medical Ultrasound Tomography (MUST 2026) was held in Wuhan, China, from June 12 to 14, convening researchers, clinicians, and industry representatives working in the field of ultrasound tomography.
The scientific program comprised 10 keynote lectures delivered by Neb Duric, Yuanyi Zheng, Nicole Ruiter, Mingyue Ding, Jijun Liu, Xingrui Li, Chengcheng Liu, Takashi Azuma, Oscar Calderon Agudo, and Yi Luo. In addition, the workshop featured 32 oral presentations and a series of poster contributions, reflecting a broad spectrum of ongoing research activities.
The presentations highlighted current developments in ultrasound tomography, including a continued expansion of application areas beyond breast imaging. Contributions addressed emerging use cases in musculoskeletal, brain imaging, and whole-body applications, alongside research into wearable ultrasound systems.
Methodological advances in image reconstruction constituted a central theme of the workshop. In particular, Full Waveform Inversion techniques were discussed, as well as the increasing integration of data-driven approaches and artificial intelligence into reconstruction pipelines. These developments aim to improve image quality and computational efficiency.
The program also included presentations of both commercial and research-oriented systems, with a focus on the design and development of hardware and system solutions enabling fast data acquisition, fast processing and clinical applicability. The growing availability of shared datasets and open-source software frameworks was noted as a contributing factor to increased collaboration and reproducibility within the field.
The workshop provided a forum for discussion on broader challenges and perspectives. Topics included standardization efforts, strategies for stakeholder and societal engagement, and considerations related to clinical translation and market adoption of ultrasound tomography technologies.
